Island Fox
Slightly smaller than a domestic House Cat, the Island Fox is a tiny fox native to six different islands off the coast of California. They bear many nicknames all unique to the various islands they inhabit. They enjoy temperate forests while snacking on fruits and insects. They use their powerful voices to intimidate other animals and are generally not shy around humans. In the 1990′s a sharp decline was discovered in the populations of Island Foxes. Research shows that Golden Eagle predation is one of the root causes for the decline as well as diseases brought in from the mainland. Because the Island Foxes are so isolated and remote, the susceptibility to disease and parasites is high putting their species at a heightened risk and they’ve been officially listed as critically endangered.
